A fad is a trend that usually lasts for a short period of time but manages to capture the attention of a lot of people. A massively popular fad one day can quickly become unpopular the next. Some fads come back in different forms and some remain gone forever. In this article, we’ll show you a few of these fads.
10. Saggy Pants
Sure, if you were Brad Pitt then having saggy pants wouldn’t be so bad. Unfortunately, not everyone looks as handsome as he does. Saggy pants are a fad that has been around for a long time. It involves wearing pants so low that a person’s underwear begins to show. Some people take this to the extreme more than others. And while the fad is still sticking around, it could be considered one of the worst ones of all time.
9. Sea-Monkeys
Introduced in 1957, Sea Monkeys were creatures that were sold in packets that were “ready to go”. Basically, you would begin by taking a water purifier and adding water to it. One day one nothing happens. But the packet contains eggs and salt and will eventually start to expand once it gets wet. There is a dye that is used in the packet which is used to increase the realism of the Sea Monkey. While you probably won’t see them anymore, they are considered a horrible fad.
8. Virtual Pets
Almost everyone is drawn to the idea of a “digital pet”. Think about it: taking care of a virtual pet by the press of a button and watching your pet grow before your eyes. Virtual pets were very popular in the 90’s and were used by people of all ages. Today they aren’t so common but they were quite popular during their time and there are still a few loyal people who continue to take part in this fad.
7. Mood Rings
Mood rings initially gained massive popularity in the 70’s. They are filled with a hollow bubble that is filled with liquid crystals. These crystals react to your skin temperature and will ultimately tell you what mood you’re in (like you didn’t know). Blue typically means blue, black typically means stressed, and there are many colors in-between that mean different things. They have re-appeared in various shops around the world but their popularity isn’t nearly as high as it used to be when they first came out.
6. Cabbage Patch Kids
This fad was developed in 1979 and became very popular in 1982. Cabbage Patch Kids could be considered the fad of the 80’s. As a matter of fact, it was so popular that parents would have riots and fight over them when the holidays rolled in. While this fad was relatively short lived, their company did manage to gross close to one billion dollars during their run. Today, Cabbage Patch Kids are more of a novelty item and even a collectable.
