10. MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is the first one on this list and it is located in Yarra Park, Melbourne. It is home to the Melbourne Cricket Club. This is the largest stadium in Australia. It also holds the world record for the highest light towers in the world; at a sporting venue that is. It was the main stadium for the Summer Olympics of 1956 and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The stadium is often referred to as ‘The G’. It opened in the year 1854 and has a capacity of 100,018 people. The record attendance at this stadium is 121,696 people. As the name suggests, it is primarily used for Cricket.

 

9. DARRELL K. ROYAL-TEXAS MEMORIAL STADIUM

It was formerly known as War memorial Stadium, memorial stadium and Texas Memorial Stadium. It is located in Austin, Texas. The construction started in early 1924 and ended in November the same year. It can hold a capacity of 100,119 people. The maximum attendance recorded was 101,624 people. The Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium is primarily used for American Football. This stadium was designed by Herbert M. Greene. It is owned by University of Texas at Austin.

 

8. BRYANT-DENNY STADIUM

Bryant Denny - Ten of the Largest Multi-Purpose Stadiums
This stadium is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is home to the University of Alabama football team. The Bryant-Denny Stadium opened up in 1929. The seating capacity of this stadium is around 101,821. If you consider the seating, it is the eighth largest non-racing stadium in the world. It is the fifth largest stadium in the United States. The construction started in October of 1928 and ended in September of 1929. The maximum attendance ever recorded was of 102,437 people.

 

7. OHIO STADIUM

The stadium is located on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and is home to the Ohio State Buckeyes Football team. This is the fourth largest football stadium in the states with the official capacity of 102,329 people. The record attendance is 106,033 people. The construction started on the 3rd August in 1921 and completed on the 7th October 1922. This stadium does not have field lights so you can forget about nighttime matches. Although, if the event absolutely has to be held at night, special lights are installed.

 

6. NEYLAND STADIUM

This stadium is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. The stadium is primarily used for football. The stadium was constructed in 1921 and since then it underwent 16 expansions. The seating capacity of this stadium as of now is 102,455 and the highest recorded attendance was 109,061. It happens to be the third largest non-racing stadium in the United States. It is named after the University of Tennessee football coast, Robert Neyland. By the way, when is say football, I mean American football.

 

5. ESTADIO AZTECA

Estadio Azteca is situated in Santa Ursula, Mexico City, Mexico and is the official home stadium of the national football team of Mexico. During the summer Olympics of 1968, this stadium was used as a host for football matches. This is also the only stadium in the world to have hosted two FIFA World Cup Finals, in 1970 and 1986. The ‘Game of the Century’ between Italy and West Germany was also hosted in this particular stadium. West Germany lost that match. The capacity of this stadium is around 105,064 and is the largest stadium in Latin America.

 

4. BEAVER STADIUM

It is an outdoor football stadium located in University Park, Pennsylvania. It is situated on the campus of The Pennsylvania State University and home to the Penn State Nittany Lions. The stadium is named after James A. Beaver, former governor of Pennsylvania. The official seating capacity of this particular stadium is around 106,572. The stadium opened up on the 17th September 1960 and has been subject to countless expansions since its birth. The stadium is primarily used for American football.

 

3. MICHIGAN STADIUM

The Michigan Stadium is also known as ‘The Big House’. It is the official football stadium for the University of Michigan. It was built in the year 1927 and cost $950,000 at that time. The original capacity of the stadium was 72,000 however that figure has now changed to 109,901 because of several expansions during the years. It is the site for graduation ceremonies held by the university. The maximum people in the stadium were recorded to 114,804 to date. The stadium is usually used for American football.

 

2. SALT LAKE STADIUM

This happens to be a multi-purpose stadium built in Bidhannagar, Kolkata, West Bengal. It happens to be the second largest of its kind in the world. The official seating capacity of the stadium is around 120,000. The stadium is currently used for football matches and athletics. Salt Lake Stadium was built in 1984 and is owned by the Indian Football Association. The stadium covers an area of 76.40 acres. I certainly had not heard of this stadium until quite recently.

This stadium was constructed for the 13th World Festival of youth and Students in the year 1989. The stadium is currently used for football, athletics and Arirang performances. It can seat around 150,000 people making it the highest capacity a stadium can seat. The main pitch of the stadium covers over 22,500 square meters and the total floor space is 207,000 square meters. The stadium comprises of eight floors. The stadium opened up on the International Labor Day in 1989 and is located in Pyongyang, North Korea.
