  • Top 10 Dance Styles

Dance is the synchronization between the body, mind and the music. The body moves in rhythm to the music being played and it can be used as an expression, exercise or social interaction. Interestingly, dances are performed by different animals to attract the opposite gender as well. Over the period of time, dance has evolved and many different types have taken form. This particular list will discuss ten of the most popular dance styles from all around the world. Dancing is no easy thing; it is a profession, a profession that is fairly hard to master. I am sure you will be familiar with some of the styles, but this list discusses some dances from different cultures that are probably new to you. Enjoy the read.

    10. TAP DANCE

Tap Dance - Top Ten Dance Styles
I am sure you know how this work. Special shoes are made for dancing the tap. What you do is that you use the sound of your shoe hitting the floor as a musical instrument. You can say that it is more like creating music with your feet and dancing to it at the same time. It is very interestingly, yet I figure it is really hard to learn. Rapid feet and leg movement is an absolute requirement. The roots of tap dance go deep into the African American dancing.

    9. ADUMU

Adumu - Top Ten Dance Styles
Adumu is one dance style I was absolutely oblivious to. It is a Maasai dance that has originated from Africa. Interestingly, this dance is mostly performed to human voice since the Maasai did not encourage the use of drums during their festivals and other rituals. All the body parts are used in this particular dance and even during a ritual the dance is participatory. You can join if you want to or otherwise just look at people doing an amazing job.

    8. YANGKO

    HELLOMOTO
I am sure you probably never heard of this particular dance. It originated from China and happens to be a popular part of their culture. It involves swaying of the body to certain rhythms. The waist and the hip are used to drive feet in order to sync with the music. The dance has a one thousand year history in China and is usually performed in the Lantern Festival. You can see a lot of videos on YouTube concerning the dance. Yangko has changed since its inception and the one that we see now happens to come from the late 1940s.

    7. KATHAK

Kathak - Top Ten Dance Styles
This happens to be one of the eight forms of classical dances in India. It originated in Utar Pradesh and can be traced back to the ancient people living in northern India. They were called Kathaks. After the sixteenth century, Kathak was influenced by Persian Dance. The name of the dance is derived from Sanskrit which means story. The classical dances can be compared to the ballet dances that I am sure you are familiar with. These dances are very complicated and usually have a meaning to them. Just like the name, they are supposed to tell some sort of a story.

    6. BHANGRA

Bhangra - Top Ten Dance Styles
Bhangra refers to a dance coming from the Punjabis in the sub-continent. It was performed to celebrate the harvest but that practice ended when the sub-continent was divided into Pakistan and India. It is originally developed in India and it took its current form somewhere in the 1990s. Bhangra is danced to a very specific kind of music specifically tailored for Bhangra. It is mostly very random with some very common dance moves. This form of dance has travelled to the western cultures as well because of a lot of movement from the sub-continent to the western countries.

    5. BELLY DANCE

Belly Dance - Top Ten Dance Styles
This particular form of dancing originated from the Middle East, in an Arabic country. Every single part of the body is involved in this dance style but the most dominant of those parts is the hip. There are many different forms to this dance and it differs from country to country. The modern belly dance evolved in the western countries and it is popular globally. Belly dancing was popularized during the Romantic Movement that took place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The dance requires a great deal of flexibility and is not at all easy.

    4. BALLET

Ballet - Top Ten Dance Styles
This is a performance dance and it originated in Italy during the fifteenth century. The dance developed in France and Russia and evolved from performance dance to concert dance. It is a very complicated form of dancing and is taught in different ballet schools all over the world. The dance is usually choreographed with vocal or orchestral music. It involves pointe work, flow and very precise acrobatic movements. The ballet went from romantic, to expressionist and neoclassical ballet. The word originally translates into ‘to dance’.

    3. STREET DANCE

Street Dance - Top Ten Dance Styles
This form of dance is formally known as vernacular dance. It involves a lot of improvisation and these dances originated outside of dance studios wherever there was space available; streets, parks, school yards and nightclubs. Break dance is also included in street dancing and it is said it originated in the New York City. Another form is Melbourne Shuffle that originated in Australia and Electro Dance which has its root in Paris, France. It involves impossible body movements as you might have seen in the movie series ‘Step Up’. It is very difficult to master.

    2. IRISH DANCE

Irish Dance - Top Ten Dance Styles
As the name suggests, the style originated from Ireland. It is a group and is a part of a broader social activity. There are many different forms of this dance; of course I will not be getting into details. Although you should know that it was popularized in 1994 with Riverdance; you can find the clips on YouTube. It involves very fast leg and foot movements while your arms mostly stay stationary. It is very difficult to master especially the solo dances. The dance is performed with traditional Irish music.

    1. SALSA

Salsa - Top Ten Dance Styles
This particular dance style comes from Cuba and it originated in the 1920s. Salsa is usually danced to the salsa music although most people perform the steps with Latin American music as well. Salsa requires a couple, although you can choreograph it as a form of line dance in which a partner might not be necessary. You can perform salsa as an improvisation but generally it is choreographed. This dance style is very popular throughout the Latin America and over time it spread through North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.

  • 10 Movies that Should Never Get Remakes

We live in the world where life without entertainment is said to be meaningless. The main and common entertainment for people has been movies, mostly. The concept of movies has been around for generations but in different forms like theatres, stage dramas etc. The movies we are talking about are totally different.  Some are good some are bad some are worse. But following is the list of super awesome movies which should and can never get a remake.

    10.Titanic

Titanic is a blockbuster film released in 1997. It was directed by James Cameron. The story of titanic was based on the journey of the actual life sized ship named titanic along with its destruction. The movie seemed too real that many people became emotional during and after the movie. The story was full of romance and thriller. In distant future someone might try to remake the Titanic but will definitely fail because it had the story that made it “not remake-able” officially.

    9.The Prestige

The Prestige is a 2006 drama, mystery and thriller movie directed by Christopher Nolan. The story is set in the end of 19th century revealing the rivalry between two magicians. The cast chosen by Nolan was nothing less than perfect, Bale, Jackman and Caine. What can go wrong? The screenplay mind f**ks every single viewer up till the very last minute of the movie. The viewer cannot get bored because the mystery is so damn well good that the curiosity gets the best of everyone. The remake of any Nolan movie is seriously the dumbest thing to do, but especially no remake can be done of this movie because every single thing is beyond awesome in this movie.

    8.American History X

American History X was released in 1998. It was directed by Tony Kaye. It is the best movie against racism up to date. The story was so deep that it might have affected some people to stop being racist and start loving the creatures of GOD. Edward Norton had played his role wonderfully, which was him acting as a crazy racist person who used to blame everything on the African American people, but in time he learned his lesson. The screenplay was so marvelously that remaking it wouldn’t even cross people’s minds. Although there have been many movies against racism but no movie, I repeat no movie is even close to being as good as this one.

    7.Fight Club

Fight Club was a 1999 Drama and somewhat Action movie. It was directed by David Fincher. Fight Club has a mind f**k story involving 2 characters played by two of Hollywood’s most famous actors; Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. The screenplay was awesome, the acting was great and the last 15 minutes of the movie paralyzed every single person watching it. The Fight Club can’t be remade because there is nothing to be improved. Not even a single Goddamn thing. Even if there is someone foolish enough to remake it, he would have to go through a lot of people (fans) to do so because people do respect the Classics.

    6.Gladiator

Gladiator is a 2000 action packed movie directed by Ridley Scott. It contains ancient roman story about a man, who was betrayed by his own corrupt people. It is filled with action even till the last minute of the movie. Anyone who has any interest in movies might have seen this awesome movie and would have loved it immediately after watching it. The legendary actor Russell Crowe has starred as the main character in this movie. The story was so brilliant that even after including more action or whatever won’t win people’s hearts because they already belong to the GLADIATOR.

  • Top 10 Most Bizarre Fraternity Hazing Incidents

When I first starting researching this list, I thought it would be funny. Pledges being made to dress as Bugs Bunny and say “I’m a naughty rabbit” all day- that kind of thing. But a few minutes, a few court cases and a few lost appendages in and I realized just how dark these rituals were. This is no schoolboy pranking – people have lost their lives in ridiculous hazing rituals (over 50, according to research by Hank Nuwer in 1990) so be prepared for the dark, disturbing and downright inhumane in our Top 10 Most Bizarre Fraternity Hazing Incidents. Not suitable for children and probably not suitable for college students either.

The Pi Alpha Kappa fraternity of Tulane University (known as “PIKE”) had something of a bad reputation for a long time, with claims by several girls that they had been drugged at a frat party there. But the fraternity’s lowest point came in 2009, when allegations about their “Hell Night” ritual led to the fraternity being shut down, and several members being arrested (no charges were brought – prosecutors are often ex-Frat boys themselves). The ritual involved pouring boiling water onto Pledges, which sounds bad enough until you hear that it was mixed with wasabi, crab boil and vinegar. Two Pledges were hospitalized with severe burns and the university stepped in to shut it down. It doesn’t seem to be missed much – a message on one forum said “This frat was notorious for starting fights, causing major trouble with the university in regards to damages and graffitti, and gave bad people everywhere a clique to expand with. I will shed no tears at its disappearance.”

    9. Klan Alpine, Alfred, and The Kidnap

Now, this is a tragic story of a hazing gone wrong. In 1978, Chuck Stenzel was a young athlete just starting out at Alfred University, Western New York. But one night, he was kidnapped from his dorm in the middle of the night, stashed in a car trunk with the other Pledges and lot of alcohol and forced to drink it all. Suffering from exposure to the cold and alcohol poisoning, Chuck was left on a mattress by his “brothers” and died overnight. His mother, Eileen Stevens, made it her life’s mission to campaign against hazing, and has set up C.H.U.C.K. (Committee to Halt Useless College Killings) which allowed her to tour colleges and speak to students about the dangers of hazing. Alfred University continued to allow fraternities until another death in 2002 shut them down for good.

    8. Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Dartmouth, and the Kiddie Pool

What could be more innocent than a kiddie pool? A lovely toy for children to splash around in…but not if it’s filled with rotting food and bodily fluids. That’s the charming welcome ritual performed by Sigma Alpha Epsilon, one of many fraternities held sacred at Dartmouth University. The practice was exposed by Andrew Lohse, a frat member who detailed his Pledge experience in the student paper “The Dartmouth”, where he concluded “One of the things I’ve learned at Dartmouth – one thing that sets a psychological precedent for many Dartmouth men – is that good people can do awful things to one another for absolutely no reason”. Other hazing rituals at SAE included making Pledges chug down vinegar, causing one to cough up blood, and the cooking up of vomit omelettes.

Naturally, Lohse’s accusations didn’t go down well with the fraternities of Dartmouth, which make up 66% of the student body. Some called him a liar, others compared him with a person who’d made up false allegations. But at least one of his frat brothers confirmed most of it was true – but the kiddy pool was actually just full of rotten food, made to look like bodily fluids. That’s OK then.

    7. Kappa Alpha Psi, Florida, and The Paddling

Paddling is among the most well-known and parodied of fraternity rituals. In common with another secret society – the Freemasons – fraternities have a reputation for hitting new recruits with a paddle until they leave a mark. But even this most traditional pursuit is getting frat boys into trouble – last year, alone two separate fraternities at the University of Florida were charged with hazing offences related to paddling. One of those was Kappa Alpha Psi, a traditionally black fraternity, who faced 13 misdemeanor sworn complaints. It came to light because another black fraternity – Alpha Phi Alpha – was also being investigated, although the university insists that they are not specifically targeting the black student community, just the act of hitting other students with paddles.

    6. Pi Kappa Alpha, Tennessee, and The Rubber Tubing

Now, this will almost certainly make you wince, so prepare yourself – A student at the University of Tennessee was hospitalized with a near-fatal level of alcohol in his blood. So far, not too unusual. But when doctors queried just how how managed to consume so much (0.448 per cent, six times the drink-driving level), the answer took them aback. It was a creative solution involving a length of rubber tubing, inserted in entirely the wrong end for drinking. The practice, known as “butt chugging” is quite widespread and extremely dangerous. As a result, the university suspended the fraternity until 2015 and 12 people were cited for underage drinking. Whether or not it was the conventional drinking method is unclear.

    5. Sigma Alpha Mu, Delaware, and The “Big Brother” Party

Another sad death in this incident, and a court case that is still running. On Nov. 8 2008, Brett Griffin died at a “Big Brother” party hosted by the Delaware chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu. He’d consumed the equivalent of 750ml of Souther Comfort, a requirement of these parties for Pledges, but the court case hinges on whether he was forced to drink it or whether he chose to do so. On the stand are Jason Aaron and Matthew Siracusa of the fraternity, who both maintain that Brett had drunk that much of his own free will, and that they had been forced to sign statements accepting responsibility, by the university. The university, of course, denies this and the case is set to conclude soon.

    4. Alpha Delta, Dartmouth, and The “Blood and Crips” Party

This one isn’t a hazing ritual as such, but was too bizarre to omit. Alpha Delta are considered to be one of the premier fraternities on the Dartmouth campus which, as previously discussed, is very fraternity-heavy. So why would such a prestigious frat house put its reputation at risk by hosting a party in the worst possible taste? The theme was “Blood and Crips”, based on two of the most dangerous gangs in L.A. and the dress code was “ghetto” (not the first “ghetto party” at Dartmouth). The NAACP were told about the party a few weeks later and were unhappy, to say the least. Eventually Alpha Delta were forced to apologise, with the not overly-sincere “Gang violence is obviously an incredibly serious problem across America, and while we as a house failed to preemptively recognize the offensive nature of the party’s theme, the gravity of our oversight is now apparent to us”. Safe to say, they are all politicians in the making.

    3. Phi Kappa Tau, Georgia Tech, and The “Rapebait”

After reading this far, you might be wondering why on Earth anyone would join a fraternity. I don’t know, but most Pledges seem to think they’ll inherit some kind of wisdom from their “Big Brothers”. So you can imagine how overjoyed the Pledges of Phi Kappa Tau at Georgia Tech were, to receive an e-mail from a frat brother telling them exactly how to score with the ladies. Unfortunately for the sender, this bit of “house business” was written on a library computer, and he left it logged in so the e-mail swiftly went public. A great way to make frat boys look even more misogynistic than ever.

    2. Chi Tau, Chico, and The Water Overdose

Another tragic and fatal overdose now, but alcohol was not the culprit this time. Matthew Carrington was a Pledge with the Chi Tau fraternity at Chico State university when he died during “Hell Week” but the cause of death was water overdose, which caused swelling on his brain and lungs. He and a fellow Pledge had been forced to do press-ups in a freezing basement, and were made to drink water from a 5-gallon bottle of water, which was filled repeatedly. They were interrogated and made to answer trivia questions, while being blasted with cold air from fans and both vomiting and urinating. Even after Matthew collapsed from a seizure, the ordeal didn’t stop and the delay in calling the ambulance may have contributed to his death. It was a horrible waste and a horrible way to die, and his frat brothers were arrested and punished for the suffering they caused.

    1. Gamma Phi Gamma, Wilmington, and the Missing Testicle

If you’re a young man reading this and still considering joining a fraternity, read this last and most painful one…and you may think again. It’s the story of Tyler Lawrence, it happened just recently and it ended up with him losing a testicle. In his hazing for Gamma Phi Gamma, he was forced to stand unclothed while some kind of “Icy Hot-like substance” was applied to his most intimate areas. Then they were whipped with knotted towels. Fairly mild, by frat standards, except that Lawrence was caught in the scrotum. As you imagine, the pain was excruciating and he ended up being taken to hospital to have the damaged area removed. Does being a frat boy still seem so attractive? I really hope not.
